About Me

Welcome to Help Me Start Investing.

If you are planning to start investing in the stock market and want to learn how to do it, then you are at the right place. Investing is like any other endeavor, there is so much information out there that it can get confusing. I have a knack for researching and presenting my research in actionable ideas that you can use.

I write about this on my blog where I tackle the basic process of investing, what accounts to open, how to maximize returns and tax savings while investing. I focus on investing in the stock market through a combination of index funds and individual stocks in my writing and webinars.

My name is Gaurav Kumar and I am an accounting professor and researcher at a University and a CPA. I love teaching and presenting complex topics in an easy to understand way. I have always been interested in Investing and Personal Finance.

When I started investing on my own, I made plenty of mistakes before I figured out the right process for investing. I created this blog as an “Investing Manual” for someone like me who is just starting to invest in the stock market.

Even though I am a CPA and have a Ph.D. in Accounting, I did not learn about any of this stuff in school or while preparing for my CPA exam. I learnt it while managing our family’s investments.

Through this website, I want to show you that investing is not complicated and you don’t need an expensive financial advisor to get started. In fact, it is much easier and cheaper to invest on your own while generating higher returns than professionals.

As you can imagine that you cannot and should not invest before you have savings. So, I will be sharing some of my lessons about saving, budgeting and other aspects of personal finance.

My investment experience includes managing our family’s portfolio which includes our retirement accounts, 529 account, HSA, IRAs and taxable brokerage accounts.

I have been investing in the stock market since 2012 and tracking my returns since then. I made plenty of mistakes but learnt a lot along the way and our investment returns have allowed my wife to partially retire in 2020.

This blog is a collection of my experiences and tips on how to start investing for someone with no experience. I enjoy researching and writing about this and I hope that you will stay and explore my blog and learn something new while saving and making some money along the way!
